Detective Pikachu Returns: Clues, Pokémon Assistance, and Ryme City
Explore Detective Pikachu Returns on Nintendo Switch, its case notebook, Growlithe-assisted investigation, and the partnership behind the mysteries.

Ryme City has another set of questions
Detective Pikachu Returns launched on Nintendo Switch on October 6, 2023. Tim Goodman and his talking, coffee-loving Pikachu investigate incidents in Ryme City, where humans and Pokémon live together. A jewel theft provides an opening case, while the disappearance of Tim’s father, Harry, remains a larger question. Tim is the only human who understands this Pikachu’s speech, giving their partnership an unusual advantage during an investigation.
The premise is enough to establish the kind of adventure without revealing the solutions. Our editorial interpretation is that the city works best as a place of intersecting perspectives: one witness may understand something that another cannot. Players interested in dialogue and deductions should therefore approach it differently from a battle-focused Pokémon game. The aim is to clarify what happened, rather than defeat a team.
The case notebook organizes the investigation
Nintendo’s official description centers on searching locations, gathering clues, and making deductions through the case notebook. The evidence comes from the world and the people or Pokémon within it. A conclusion connects those observations rather than appearing automatically because a familiar species is present. The notebook gives the investigation a visible structure and helps distinguish the current case from the larger questions surrounding the partners.
Before reaching a conclusion, ask which clue it explains and whether another clue remains awkward. That habit keeps a theory from becoming persuasive merely because it sounds interesting. In a shared reading session, each person can suggest an interpretation while one person controls the game. This is an optional way to enjoy the mystery together, not a claim that the software includes a multiplayer mode.
Pokémon abilities become investigative tools
Pokémon can contribute through their particular skills. Nintendo gives Growlithe’s sense of smell as an example of assistance that uncovers clues. Pikachu can also speak directly with Pokémon to obtain information and discover their personalities. The game therefore uses species identity in more than one way: a Pokémon can be a witness, a helper, or a character whose response changes how a scene is understood.
This is a useful contrast with treating a Pokémon image as interchangeable decoration. An ability matters when it answers a real problem in the investigation. While playing, notice which obstacles involve finding information and which involve reaching something hidden. Separating those questions helps explain why a helper is useful. It also gives a reason to revisit the species afterward in the Pokédex without implying that the reference page reveals the case solution.
Start with the right expectations
Returns follows the original Nintendo 3DS Detective Pikachu, but it is a separate Nintendo Switch release. Nintendo lists it as a single-player adventure. Its current compatibility information states that behavior on Nintendo Switch 2 is consistent with Nintendo Switch. That is a compatibility statement, not a claim that the game has received a separate Switch 2 edition or a new collection of cases.
Choose it for the detective partnership, the conversations, and the satisfaction of organizing clues. Someone primarily seeking team battles should compare a different Pokémon format instead. For the most enjoyable spoiler-conscious reading, stop at the setup and let the individual cases introduce their own questions. Our original Detective Pikachu article explains the earlier handheld adventure, and the Growlithe entry provides background on one of the Pokémon whose abilities make investigation possible.
