Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: Paldea, Three Story Paths, and Tera Types
A practical overview of Scarlet and Violet's Paldea region, first partners, three adventure paths, Terastallization, and version differences.

A Pokémon journey built around exploration
Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet are GAME FREAK's 2022 Nintendo Switch adventures in Paldea. Their central change is an open world in which towns and wilderness connect without the old route-by-route structure. You still catch Pokémon, train a party, and battle other Trainers, but deciding where to go becomes a much larger part of the experience. A map marker can suggest an objective without turning every trip into a single prescribed corridor.
The first partner choices are Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. Scarlet pairs your journey with Koraidon, while Violet uses Miraidon. These Legendary companions also support travel through the region. Choosing a version should therefore begin with the particular Pokémon and visual identity you prefer, followed by checking the version-exclusive species you want to collect. Owning one version does not mean every Pokémon in both games will be available through that copy alone.
Three paths, three different objectives
Victory Road follows the familiar goal of challenging Gyms. Path of Legends centers on Titan Pokémon. Starfall Street concerns Team Star and its bases. The official Nintendo introduction presents these as three grand stories that can be woven together at your own pace. Treating them as interchangeable tasks misses the reason the structure is interesting: each path gives a different purpose to exploring the same landscape.
A useful approach is to maintain a short plan rather than an exhaustive checklist. Choose a nearby objective, look at the Pokémon and resources along the way, and reassess before crossing the whole region for the next marker. Freedom over travel order is most enjoyable when paired with attention to your party's condition and the challenge in front of it. This is planning advice, not a claim that every objective becomes equally difficult in every order.
| Path | Primary focus |
|---|---|
| Victory Road | Gym challenges |
| Path of Legends | Titan Pokémon |
| Starfall Street | Team Star bases |
Why a Tera Type is a separate question
Terastallization gives Paldea's Pokémon a crystalline appearance and introduces a Tera Type that matters in battle. The strategic point is to distinguish a species' usual typing from the typing involved when it Terastallizes. A familiar Pokémon can therefore present a different matchup from the one its ordinary appearance suggests. Tera Raid Battles make checking that information especially relevant before settling on an attacker.
For team planning, keep ordinary defensive matchups, move coverage, and the intended Tera Type in separate columns. That makes it easier to see what a transformation is meant to accomplish instead of assuming a sparkling form is automatically an improvement. The exact interaction depends on the game rules and the Pokémon involved. A general Pokédex type chart is a useful reference, but it should not replace reading the encounter or transformation details shown in the game.
Base game, shared exploration, and paid additions
Union Circle provides a way to explore together, while battles, trades, and other communication features have their own requirements. The distinction matters: seeing several players in the same world is not proof that every story battle is cooperative. Check the official instructions for the specific activity you intend to use, especially if your plan involves separate consoles or internet play.
The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero is a separate paid expansion with two connected parts. Kitakami and Blueberry Academy extend the adventure beyond Paldea, but they should not be treated as areas automatically included in every base-game purchase. Match the DLC to Scarlet or Violet correctly before buying. Readers comparing the franchise's design changes can also contrast Paldea's open world with Legends: Arceus's surveying focus and Z-A's concentrated urban setting.
