Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon: What Changes in Alola
Compare the expanded Alola releases with Sun and Moon through Necrozma's story, changed trials, Ultra Wormholes, Mantine Surf, and current platform context.

Separate games, rather than an expansion pass
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon are separate Nintendo 3DS releases from 2017. They revisit Alola with an altered story and additional activities, placing greater emphasis on Necrozma and the mysteries surrounding Solgaleo and Lunala. They are not DLC for the original Sun and Moon cartridges, and their relationship should not be confused with the direct-sequel structure of Black 2 and White 2.
The distinction helps set expectations. Returning to a familiar region can mean a new timeline, an expanded retelling, or an addition to an existing save. The Ultra pair offers a revised Alola journey, so a player should expect to encounter familiar places again rather than simply load an old Sun or Moon save into a new chapter. The product relationship is a more useful starting point than describing every later version as an upgrade.
A revised island challenge
The island challenge remains, with some trials playing differently and a new trial associated with Mina. The first partner choices remain Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio. A return visit therefore combines familiarity with revised events. Knowing the original region can provide context, but it should not be used as proof that every encounter, objective, or story outcome is unchanged.
For a returning player, it is sensible to notice the specific differences as they appear rather than treating the adventure as a speedrun through remembered instructions. A guide written for the original pair may answer a general question about Alola while failing to answer an Ultra-specific one. Make the game title part of any search for a location, trial, or acquisition method. This is especially useful when a Pokémon can be found through several different activities.
Ultra Wormholes and Mantine Surf
Ultra Wormhole travel expands the adventure's connection to other worlds. The official Nintendo feature describes riding Solgaleo or Lunala through the wormhole, with Ultra Beasts and various Legendary Pokémon among the reasons to explore. Some Legendary encounters differ by version. These activities give the late-game collecting project a different structure from merely revisiting every familiar Alola route.
Mantine Surf adds a scored water-sport activity as well as travel between islands. It asks for technique and a high score, which is a different kind of mastery from building a battle party. Team Rainbow Rocket and additional Z-Moves provide other distinct additions. The useful comparison is therefore not a single count of more content, but a look at what kinds of activities have changed: story, collecting routes, performance, and battles.
| Feature | What it adds to the comparison |
|---|---|
| Necrozma-focused story | A revised Alola narrative |
| Ultra Wormhole travel | Other worlds and additional encounters |
| Mantine Surf | A scored activity beyond standard battles |
| Changed trials | Differences inside the island challenge |
Choosing an Alola journey today
If the original story is your main interest, read the Sun and Moon overview before treating the Ultra releases as automatic replacements. If the expanded activities and Necrozma focus are the draw, the Ultra pair is the relevant product. Neither preference requires claiming a universal best version. Story emphasis and feature variety are different reasons to choose a game.
These are Nintendo 3DS games, so historical marketing pages need current service context. Ordinary 3DS internet play ended in 2024. Nintendo schedules Pokémon Bank's shutdown for February 25, 2027. Offline play, local communication, and transfer services are separate subjects; the status of one does not establish the status of the others.
For ongoing collecting, keep records of which game and method produced a Pokémon. A species page supplies biological and type context, while a game guide supplies encounter details. This separation becomes especially valuable in Alola, where regional forms, wormhole encounters, and different release pairs make a name alone an incomplete description of the route to a Pokémon.
