Orre reaches the Switch 2 classics library

Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness joined Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics in March 2026. Nintendo’s United States announcement was published on March 17. Access requires a Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. This is a classics-library release of the GameCube adventure, not a new standalone remake with a redesigned story or a new regional Pokédex.

The platform and membership combination is the first practical check. A basic Nintendo Switch Online membership is different from the Expansion Pack tier, and the GameCube application is a Switch 2 feature. Do not assume that seeing a Nintendo 64 Pokémon game on an older Switch means the same device can run this GameCube release. The library offer should be read as its own product, with its own supported hardware.

The adventure begins with Eevee

The original 2005 game follows an adventure in Orre involving Shadow Pokémon, with Eevee as the starting companion and Shadow Lugia central to its identity. Nintendo describes the goal as snagging and purifying Shadow Pokémon while stopping an organization’s scheme. Rather than collecting a full party from ordinary wild encounters at the outset, the story gives the rescue of affected Pokémon a central role.

Our editorial interpretation is that this structure changes what a new teammate means. It is not only a useful addition to a roster; it is part of the plot’s unfinished work. Someone approaching XD after Stadium should expect a directed role-playing adventure, while someone arriving from a core handheld game should expect a different route into team building. Those comparisons explain the format without revealing late story events or pretending we have conducted a new technical review.

The original transfer setup is not reproduced

Nintendo explicitly warns that Pokémon cannot be transferred from Game Boy Advance titles to this Nintendo Classics version. The old GameCube-to-GBA arrangement therefore must not be presented as a feature of the rerelease. The announcement also does not establish Pokémon HOME support. A familiar menu, historical instruction booklet, or memory of an old cable is not enough evidence that a corresponding modern transfer path exists.

This is especially relevant if preserving a personal collection is your main reason to play. Separate the experience of completing XD from the question of moving a Pokémon elsewhere. Read a current official compatibility notice before making plans around any transfer. Our original XD profile discusses its historical role, while this page focuses on the present access rules. Treating those as separate articles keeps a rerelease guide from silently inheriting assumptions from twenty-year-old hardware.

Update the application and set expectations

Nintendo Support records an April 2026 application update addressing a software-closing issue in XD. Its guidance is to update Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics to the latest version. That is a specific support fix, not evidence that every possible issue has disappeared or that the game now matches all original peripherals. Keeping the application current is a sensible first step before investigating a problem in an older installation.

For a first visit, confirm your system and membership, update the classics application, and approach the game as a self-contained Orre adventure. If you are deciding between a subscription and another Pokémon purchase, compare the actual library you want to use rather than assuming a single game justifies the same choice for everyone.
