Eevee and the Road of Eight Lanterns

Eight lantern paths offer Eevee eight exciting possibilities, until a night of exploration reveals that a future does not have to be chosen before breakfast.

Eight directions at once

There were eight lanterns at the crossroads, and Eevee counted them four times. Blue above the water path. Yellow beside the stone steps. Red where the trail passed an old fire pit. Violet, silver, green, pale turquoise, and pink, each hanging from a different branch. A small wooden arrow pointed back toward the meadow. That made nine directions altogether, although the meadow did not seem to count as a future. Eevee had come from there already.

Every autumn, the forest Pokémon held a lantern walk. This was Eevee's first. It had imagined a line of lights through the trees, a few berries, and a place to sleep afterward. It had not imagined finding eight different versions of what it might become waiting at eight different paths. Vaporeon waved from the river trail. Jolteon stood on the steps with sparks catching briefly in its yellow fur. Flareon had found the warmest patch of red light.

Eevee glanced at its own brown paws. They were useful paws. They carried it over roots, dug neatly for fallen nuts, and tucked comfortably beneath its body when it slept. Yet looking at all those lanterns made them feel unfinished. Perhaps this was why the grown Pokémon had invited it. Perhaps tonight was a choosing night. Eevee had never heard anyone say that, but the thought arrived with such confidence that it seemed rude to question it.

Sylveon greeted Eevee beside the pink lantern. One ribbonlike feeler curled toward the paths in a welcoming sweep. Eevee gave a small nod, the kind meant to show it was ready for an important occasion. Sylveon led it toward the river first. Eevee tried to memorize the other colors before leaving. If blue proved perfect, would the others vanish? The lanterns looked ordinary enough, but Eevee had read meaning into the smallest things all afternoon.

The river path smelled of wet bark. Vaporeon slipped into the water and emerged beside a flat rock, carrying a bright leaf on its head. It pushed the leaf toward Eevee and paddled backward through a little whirlpool. Eevee watched, delighted. A life in water would mean seeing the roots beneath the bank and the silver flashes below the surface. It could visit the island nobody reached without getting their feet wet. Blue suddenly seemed an excellent answer.

Then Eevee tried to follow along the shore and landed in a shallow patch of mud. Vaporeon returned at once, nosing a dry root toward it as a foothold. Eevee climbed out with one muddy ankle. The mistake did not spoil the river's beauty, but it made the imagined future less tidy. Vaporeon waited while Eevee shook its paw, then pointed upstream, where the path curved away from the water. Another lantern glimmered there. Apparently a blue answer could still lead to a yellow question.

The river offers Eevee a beautiful possibility, along with a muddy first lesson.

The futures with sore paws

Jolteon had arranged a trail of pinecones up the stone steps. At a flick of its ears, it bounded between them, fast enough to leave Eevee blinking. Eevee tried the course and knocked the third pinecone into the sixth. Jolteon did not mind. It moved the pinecones farther apart and ran again, leaving wider spaces for Eevee's shorter legs. At the top, Eevee could see the river and the first lantern through the leaves. Speed might be a wonderful future too.

The steps joined a trail beside the old fire pit. Flareon lay where sun-warmed stones had kept some heat after dusk. Nearby, berries rested in a shallow pan, softening over a small controlled fire. Eevee settled beside Flareon and felt its own wet ankle grow pleasantly warm. A future with this much comfort was difficult to refuse. Then a breeze shifted the smoke. Eevee sneezed so hard that one berry rolled out of the pan. Flareon nudged it back with a patient paw.

Beyond the fire pit, Leafeon waited in a grove full of green lantern light. It knew a trail hidden beneath ferns, where stepping carefully meant leaving almost no mark. Eevee followed, discovering how loud its own paws could be on dry leaves. Leafeon paused to show it a smoother strip of earth between the roots. The grove seemed alive in ways the crossroads had not. Eevee wondered whether belonging to it would mean understanding every growing thing without needing anyone to explain.

A cool draft led them toward Glaceon's pale lantern. The path crossed a spring so cold that a fine white edge had formed around its stones. Glaceon moved over the slick surface easily, while Eevee kept to the bank. It admired how each careful step balanced strength and lightness. It also discovered that being impressed by cold did not make its own nose any warmer. Glaceon guided it to a dry rock, where moonlight fell through the branches like a blanket that had forgotten to be warm.

Four possibilities had become five, and Eevee had begun keeping score. Water offered hidden worlds. Speed offered a wide view. Warmth offered comfort. Leaves offered belonging. Ice offered elegance. But every list had a second column: mud, sore legs, smoke, noisy feet, a cold nose. Eevee worried that noticing the difficulties meant it was not suited to any future at all. The others had looked so natural beneath their lanterns. They did not seem to have second columns.

At the next bend, the violet lantern waited beside a sheltered clearing. Espeon watched Eevee approach and shifted a cushion of dry moss toward it. Eevee sat down so abruptly that the moss puffed around its paws. Through the trees, the silver lantern was already brightening as the sky darkened. Eevee had not reached all eight paths, but the night seemed to be passing faster than it could think. It stared at Espeon's calm face and hoped thinking itself might have a shortcut.

Each path is inviting, but none is quite as simple as Eevee first imagined.

A clearing between choices

Espeon did not offer a shortcut. It offered half a berry and the chance to sit. Umbreon arrived from the silver path, carrying a dry branch for the campfire. Its rings glowed softly in the gathering dark. Eevee looked from one to the other. Even the quiet clearing held two different futures. It almost stood to continue walking, afraid that resting would waste the few hours it had left. Umbreon pushed the berry nearer. Nothing in the gesture suggested a deadline.

Around the fire, the other walkers arrived by different trails. Jolteon came from the river instead of the steps. Vaporeon appeared with leaves caught along its back, having investigated Leafeon's grove. Glaceon settled beyond the fire's warmth, while Flareon went to look at the cold spring. Eevee watched them with increasing confusion. It had treated every path as the property of the Pokémon beneath its lantern. Yet they were visiting one another's paths without becoming anyone else.

Sylveon laid eight fallen leaves in a circle beside Eevee. One feeler traced the spaces between them, then looped back to the first leaf. Eevee followed the movement and remembered how the river trail had led to the steps, and the steps to the fire pit. The paths were not eight roads that separated forever. They were parts of the same forest walk. Eevee could take a direction, return, and choose another. The missing thought was almost embarrassingly small.

Still, its worry had not disappeared. Someday its body might change. Someday it might prefer one kind of place enough to make a real choice. Around it sat eight convincing examples of how different a life could become. Eevee wondered whether waiting was merely a way to avoid being wrong. Espeon moved the remaining half berry into reach. Umbreon lifted its head toward a noise at the clearing's edge, then relaxed when a leaf fell. Neither behaved as though the future needed to be settled tonight.

Eevee ate. It had been hungry for an hour without noticing. Once the hunger eased, the night grew larger: the smell of moss, the thin crackle of the fire, the lantern reflections caught on every pair of eyes. It remembered the river island and the view from the steps. Those were not promises it had failed to keep. They were things it had enjoyed. It could carry them forward without choosing a new name for itself before dawn.

When most of the walkers curled up to sleep, Eevee remained beside Umbreon at the clearing's edge. The silver trail glowed between dark roots. Beyond it, the meadow arrow stood at the crossroads, pointing toward an ordinary brown road. Eevee had barely looked at that road before. Now it wondered where it went after the meadow, beyond the bend it had never explored. Curiosity stirred in its tired paws. The thought felt different from keeping score: smaller, clearer, and entirely its own.

A pause beside the silver path gives Eevee room to think beyond a deadline it invented.

The ninth direction

Morning found Eevee on the moss cushion with a leaf across its nose. It sneezed, dislodged the leaf, and heard Jolteon's feet landing nearby. The lanterns were being taken down. Their colors had faded in daylight, revealing paper seams, wooden frames, and careful knots. Eevee watched Sylveon fold the pink one. The lantern had seemed like a declaration last night. In the morning it was a beautiful object someone had made, ready to be used again next year.

At the crossroads, Vaporeon offered the river trail once more. Eevee looked toward the blue frame, then shook its head gently and pointed to the meadow arrow. Nobody seemed disappointed. Flareon yawned. Leafeon sniffed a new leaf near the path. Glaceon inspected the shade beneath a rock. The others had their own mornings to consider. Eevee realized it had imagined itself at the center of a ceremony that had actually welcomed everyone. That was a relief, although it made its serious nod from yesterday feel rather grand.

Sylveon joined Eevee as far as the meadow. Along the way, they crossed the stream that fed Vaporeon's river and passed the lower end of Jolteon's steps. One narrow trail could touch several worlds. Eevee noticed that its muddy ankle had dried and its legs no longer ached. The second column of yesterday's list had not been a warning against adventure. It was a record of having done something. A future would probably contain such records too.

Beyond the familiar grass, the road bent around a fallen oak. Eevee had always turned home before that point. Today it went farther and discovered a hillside covered in small purple flowers. A low stone wall held the last warmth of sunrise. It could smell water somewhere downhill and hear a busy rustling above the wall. None of those things required an immediate decision about what it would become. They only required a little attention and another step.

Eevee climbed onto the wall. Sylveon remained below, ribbons stirring in the breeze. Eevee looked back at the forest, where the eight paths were now ordinary trails among the trees. It could remember every lantern color. It could also remember a different feeling from each path, and those feelings did not cancel one another. Perhaps it would choose one day. Perhaps the choice would arrive through many small mornings rather than one important night. Either way, it wanted to know this hillside first.

By lunchtime, Eevee had found three good places to rest, a stream shallow enough to cross, and a berry bush it intended to revisit. Its paws were still brown. Its tail was still the tail it had brought to the lantern walk. It did not feel unfinished when it tucked them close beneath the stone wall. Across the meadow, the forest waited with eight kinds of light remembered inside it. Ahead, the road continued beyond another bend. Eevee slept happily between the two.
