A battle platform rather than another regional journey

Pokémon Champions launched on Nintendo Switch on April 8, 2026, followed by iOS and Android on June 17. It centers on turn-based Pokémon battles instead of a route through towns, wild encounters, and Gym badges. The official site confirms cross-platform play, so the device a Trainer uses does not separate that Trainer from the wider battle community. Its free-to-start model also includes optional purchases.

This distinction matters when choosing a game. Someone interested mainly in team combinations can focus on decisions within a match, while someone seeking exploration should look at a core adventure instead. Our editorial view is that Champions is most useful as a place to study how a team functions together. A powerful individual Pokémon and a coherent group of six are different things, and the battle format makes that difference visible.

Choose the format before choosing the team

The official gameplay guide lists Ranked, Casual, and Private Battles, with both Single and Double Battle formats. Ranked results affect placement and provide Victory Points, or VP. Casual offers a less formal setting, while Private Battles let participants arrange their own encounters. Regulations change over time, including eligible Pokémon and other parameters. Mega Evolution featured in the initial Ranked rules; that does not mean every future regulation must use identical conditions.

A practical learning plan starts with one format and one clear team idea. In doubles, ask which partners protect each other, which can act before an opponent, and what happens if one is removed. In singles, consider safe switches and how a team recovers after losing its preferred matchup. These are questions for evaluating your own play, rather than a promise that one fashionable species will solve every battle.

Recruitment and HOME are separate routes

Pokémon can be recruited through Roster Ranch or brought in as compatible visitors from Pokémon HOME. Only species supported by Champions can visit. Pokémon recruited within Champions cannot be sent to HOME. Visiting Pokémon can return, but Champions training does not overwrite their HOME data; the game remembers that training for a later visit, with the official guide describing a special reset condition when a visitor returns in another form.

The useful mental distinction is between the original Pokémon and its battle preparation inside this game. Before spending resources, check whether you are using a trial recruit, a permanent recruit, or a visitor. Trials help test a fit but cannot be trained during their trial period. Keep a short note of the role you want a recruit to fill so that recruitment becomes a deliberate decision rather than an endless search for a higher-looking statistic.

Training, competition, and a sensible first session

VP supports recruitment and training, while the official guide also describes recruitment and training tickets. Training can adjust moves, Abilities, and relevant stats. Champions is the announced VGC software for Worlds 2026 and associated Championship Series events, with an explicit note that some regional events may use Scarlet or Violet. Event rules therefore remain the authority for a particular competition, rather than a general overview page.

For a first session, pick a format, read its current regulation, build a team with recognizable jobs, and play several matches before making major changes. Review one mistake at a time: an unsafe switch, an unsupported attacker, or a plan that depended on the opponent cooperating. The Pokédex can help compare types and species, but it cannot replace the current in-game eligibility list.
